Garden Design Trends for 2016

Gardens are a significant aesthetic point of any house. If you are thinking of selling or buying a house, gardens can be one of the deciding factors. Things like well planned walkways, native plantings and effective watering and reticulation systems not only save you money, but they can also boost your home's overall value. According to landscape economist John Harris, good landscaping can add up to 28% to overall home value, making beautiful and smart garden designs a good investment.

Your garden is a place where you can retreat to when you want to relax and entertain. In order to create an oasis of serenity, let's take a look at the various trends which could make your garden a more enjoyable and pleasant space. Also, it's important to keep in mind that good garden maintenance is key and that without it, you cannot hope to landscape and nurture your garden.


Divide Your Space
Having a large backyard does not mean that all of it has to be used as a garden. You can transform some parts for different purposes like a zen garden, a play area or build a small gazebo or pergola to add interest and visual appeal. You could use wooden dividers an as eco‐friendly solution to divide up the space. Wooden dividers are convenient to move around if you want to enlarge or shrink an area. On the other hand, you can use visual cues such as well planned shrubbery, bamboo screening or water features to distinguish the various areas in your backyard.

Use Native Plants
Unless you want to spend a lot of time watering and taking care of your plants, it is often a good idea to plant only native greenery. Not only will it be easy and cheaper to buy seeds or saplings, but, native flowers are sure to survive for a longer period of time as they are used to the climate. Furthermore, you can choose from a large variety of beautiful and unique native plants to help you create a magnificent garden design and make your garden truly awe‐inspiring.

Get Rid of Weed the Green Way
Nobody likes to deal with weed in their garden, and it can become overbearing unless dealt with quickly. Instead of using harsh chemicals and pesticides to weed your garden, it is better to try and fight it from another angle. Using ground cover such as thyme, you can provide a protective layer to your greens, ensure that moisture does not evaporate quickly, and make sure that the weed is tamed. Also, if you plant them carefully and with a design in mind, it can help boost the feel and look of your garden.

Install a Watering System
Watering your plants is crucial and tedious if you have a big backyard and live in a hot climate. However, installing an irrigation system could help you out. Design and plan your reticulation system and installation of the irrigation pipework with care to avoid it from disrupting your garden’s design. Introduce spray nozzles and hide them inconspicuously so that your garden gets plenty of water, effectively and efficiently without sacrificing on design.


Create a Lovely Pathway
Depending on your backyard’s overall design and size, it is a good idea to update it with a few pathways. You can get really creative with this and use almost any kind of natural material to help your backyard look serene and beautiful. Think about the walkway design, meandering, straight or circular, and plan the materials you intend on using and how they will affect your garden design, and the pathways to avoid having to repair it every weekend. It is a good idea to design the path so that it  walks you through your garden and offers a truly amazing view.

Staying up‐to‐date with current garden trends is necessary to help your backyard standout and to give you a good idea of what you need to improve in your landscape design. Bear in mind that a big backyard with a complicated design will need plenty of maintenance and care to keep it looking good.
