Pronounced ‘hue-gah’, Hygge is a danish concept (although Norwegian in origin), described as a feeling or mood that comes from taking genuine pleasure in making ordinary, every day things more meaningful, beautiful or special.
The concept of Hygge conjures up emotions of happiness, love and kinship and evokes warm images of cosiness, comfort, beauty and simplicity. It's the art of creating beauty and happiness with your self, your family, friends and in your home.
For some, Hygge is 'the art of creating intimacy', for me Hygge is a warm cosy hug!
As opposed to design that can leave your home feeling cold, stark and sterile, simple but smart design can create a warm, cosy and inviting environment - i.e. Hygge! To create Hygge in your home, here are a few cosy tips!

Layer It On
Create a simple layered and hyggeligt (cosy) interior using tactile textiles throughout your home. A thick rug or wooly sheepskin on the floor, throws and cushions on the furniture, warm wooden accents and thoughtful art, photos and accessories create a cosy and inviting sanctuary. Think lots and lots of sumptuous layers of knits, leather, velvet, sheepskin scattered around.

Light It Up
Use natural light to its maximum. Even though the high season of Hygge is Christmas, when it is usually long and dark, there is nothing stoping you from creating a hyggeligt interior that can be enjoyed in every season. Surround yourself with stylish candle stands, scented or unscented candles and pretty white light pendants and lamps to cast a warm glow around the room.

Bring the outdoors in to create a cosy haven. Start with a wall mural to create a feature wall and accessorise using wreaths made from leaves, bare branches and twigs in a vase, plenty of green plants in hanging pots or planters or even stacked wooden logs in a jute or cane basket. Use dark moody greens and soft greys in your colour palette to continue with the theme of bringing nature into your home.

Share With Loved Ones
Lastly, Hygge is all about sharing happiness and wellbeing with your family and friends and creating special memories. So invite your loved ones over and enjoy your Hyggelig home!

According to Meik Wiking, author of The Little Book of Hygge, a hyggelig interior is not just about how things look but also about how they feel. The feeling of a textured wooden table or a wooly sheepskin fur is distinctly different from something made from steel, glass or plastic. Meik explains Hygge as preserving everyday happiness and about making the most of every moment. It is about gratitude, savouring the small things, relaxation, good food, great company and mood lighting.
However you may choose to interpret and practice Hygge, it is a beautiful and happy concept that should be celebrated and enjoyed everyday. The Danes should know, after all everybody knows that they are the happiest people on Earth!
